Ice Block O' Fun

Maggie helped me make a giant block of ice filled with smaller, colored ice cubes, shells, and the only water animal toys we had.
An orange alligator, a goose and a duck. Sad, huh?
I gave the kids a squirt bottle of warm water and a salt shaker to try to dig their toys out. They had fun playing and it occupied them for quite a while. Shaking the salt was their favorite part. This is the only action shot I got.
Got the idea for this activity from Counting Coconuts.

LOVE this! I was going to do this next week with fruit, but I love making it an "I SPY". Great blog!

Lovely! I really like that you put smaller ice cubes inside the big block- very creative!

What a fun activity! Did it take long to freeze it?

Yes, I froze it overnight. We made the colored ice cubes in the morning, the big block in the afternoon, and froze the whole thing overnight. Then we played with it the next morning.

Did it take them long to unfreeze it?? I love this idea - we've done a jello excavation, I think its time we do an ice cube one! And I love the addition of the salt :)

It took several hours. More toys, more salt, and warmer water would have been better. Ours was mostly one big chunk of ice because I didn't put enough toys in it (tried to stick to the water theme).
